Tradie Tough Test: Bosch’s Wallscanner D-Tect 200 C

D-Tect

The days of guesswork when it comes to walls are over. No longer do tradies need to pace back and forth, knocking on or down walls to figure out what’s inside. Bosch’s D-Tect 200 C is here and it’ll save tradies time and vastly improve safety.

THE 200 C is a massive advantage safety-wise, allowing chippies or sparkies to safely cut or drill into a wall without hitting dangerous objects like wires inside. It detects anything from pipes (water-filled or not), live and voltage-free cables, metal and non-metal objects and more.

This makes it invaluable to tradies across a tonne of industries. Its latest leakage-detection function is a huge plus for plumbers or any tradies conducting HVAC work. The leak-detection mode scans for high levels of moisture in the wall to pinpoint the source of a leak.

The 200 C uses Bosch Radar Technology and an upgraded HMI, making detection as precise as possible to about +/- 5mm. For this Tradie Tough Test, we met up with Toby Spicer from Swell Building at a site at Cranbourne, Melbourne.

TEST #1: WIRES CROSSED

A carpenter by trade; Toby found the 200 C great for installing items into walls. “What we did was try and find any live cables a plaster wall,” said Toby.

“We needed to get in there and put on some knobs for towel racks.”
“The last thing you want to do is put a blade through a wall and hit live power, and with the latest distance-measurement function, the 200 C was able to give us a look at what lay hidden inside the wall.”

Thanks to the 200 C, Toby could see all kinds of objects, such as wiring and pipes.

“Thank goodness I didn’t start ripping through it,” he added. “I would’ve been in a world of trouble.”

TEST #2: WHAT A STUD

Toby then used the 200 C to identify studs in the wall for his towel racks. While he does have a stud finder, Toby said the 200 C was simpler to use and more accurate.

“This tool is way more advanced than your conventional stud finder,” he said. “The interface is clean and clear, and I can even save shots of the walls if I need to refer to them later.”

These findings can easily be transferred to a laptop as well via USB-C or micro SD card.

WHAT LIES BENEATH

There really aren’t any tradies who wouldn’t benefit from having a D-Tect 200 C in their kits. Its ability to see the unseen provides users with a new level of peace of mind. “I’ve never had to use something this high-tech before,” Toby said. “But believe me, now that it’s in my arsenal, I’ll be using it all the time. “For me as a carpenter, it’s crucial to be able to see behind a wall, especially for maintenance work.” The 200 C will also last a long time, thanks to regular firmware upgrades from Bosch.
