Safe concreting practices a priority in 2023

Concreters are being reminded to have hardened plans when it comes to safety and maintenance of their operations heading into 2023.
Acting SafeWork NSW head John Tansey said between 2017 and 2020 inspectors were on the scenes of nearly 60 incidents related to hazardous operations in concreting.
This unfortunately included one fatality and 17 involving serious injury.

“Recently there have been multiple occurrences of workers being injured by a concrete line hose which has either blocked or burst and expelled concrete at significant force, as well as equipment impacting with powerlines, scaffolding and other infrastructure,” he said.
“During a recent pour site in Wagga, a concrete pump connection point burst after a blockage and a member of the public’s car was sprayed with concrete as they drove past the site.

John said before worked commences it was essential for workers to verify if the terrain is suitable for concrete placing equipment operations and identify hazards including overhead powerlines or trenching.
“Always ensure you have safe work systems in place and that anyone performing high-risk work is adequately licensed, trained and supervised when doing so,” he added.
