Safe Work Australia has recommended the elimination of the use of silica and manufactured stone as a whole.
The Federal Government has accepted the findings of the report, however a timeline for a ban is not yet clear.
High silica-based stone products cause silicosis – an incurable lung disease common in tradies who are regularly exposed to it.

The construction industry has the highest percentage of silicosis cases.
“The final report is powerful and compelling,” Employment and Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke said.
“It shows very clearly why we need further action to protect workers from this deadly disease.
“No one should ever contract a terminal illness simply because they’ve turned up to work.
“The Government is working with the states and territories on a co-operative national response.”
Mr Burke said the Federal Government would meet with Work Health and Safety Ministers this year to decide on the next steps.
Safe Work Australia was commissioned by the Federal Government earlier this year to conduct the report on a silica ban.
Regardless of any outcome from a government level, the CFMEU has resolved to stamp out the use of manufactured stone by its members from July 2024.
