Aussie tradies are saving the day for DIY disasters for homeowners, as a new survey has revealed just how often DIY projects go wrong.
A national survey from Australia’s online tradie marketplace, hipages, has shown nearly half (43 per cent) of Aussie homeowners have experienced a DIY disaster in the last 12 months, equivalent to over 4.2 million households.
Over two-thirds (69 per cent) admit to attempting DIY to keep costs down and speed up the home improvement process. However, the data reveals the average cost of fixing DIY repairs is up to $500 – and is costing households more in the long run.

The nation’s top DIY jobs gone wrong include painting (43 per cent), landscaping and gardening (33 per cent), plumbing (26 per cent), cabinetry (21 per cent) and tiling (18 per cent).
According to the survey, 41 per cent of homeowners say a DIY Disaster is mostly likely to occur in the bathroom, followed closely by the kitchen at 32 per cent.
“Bathrooms and kitchens are arguably the most important rooms in the home. But given they both feature running water and expensive fixtures/appliances, even seemingly simple projects like painting require expertise,” Ex-The Block contestants, tradies and interior designers, Kyal and Kara said.

“We’re a nation that loves to have-a-go, and with household budgets being as tight as they are, it’s completely understandable that Aussies are turning to DIY,” VP of Marketing at hipages, Nicholas Ellery said.
